This story begins about 31 years ago. I was going through a very hard time and was seeking counsel from my pastor. He advised me to look around for someone to help. He must have sensed I was self-absorbed.
My mom had a friend who had recently been through a divorce and a heart attack. She lived near my son’s preschool, so one morning I had an idea to bring her a chicken salad sandwich.
I dropped my son off at school, and with baby in tow, knocked on her door. She graciously let me in, and I can still remember sitting at her kitchen table watching her eat her sandwich.
Every Christmas since then I received a Christmas card signed “Fondly, Mary Lou”. Every so often my mom spoke to her on the phone, and mom told me that Mary Lou was asking for me, and said how kind I was to her.
It pleases me now that I took my pastors advice, and that I was a good representative of the Lord to her. Last Christmas I did not get a card from Mary Lou. Her son called a couple months ago. He said he got to spend the last month of his mother’s life with her, and he said that his mom mentioned me several times. He said she left me in her will! A couple of weeks ago I received a beautiful card from him, with a check for $2,000!
The timing of this was incredible. I had to take a hiatus for the summer from my babysitting job because my husband has pancreatic cancer. This money more than made up for the money I would make over the summer. Just another reminder from my Heavenly Father that He is looking out for me. “The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all that I need.” Psalm 23:1
