The spring this year in New England has been wet and cool- I’d dare say cold. I still dress in layers each morning – then grab a jacket as I head out to walk our puppy. But, while walking on these overcast days I’ve watched the small buds burst forth into individual leaves and within about a week the once barren trees are lush and green! It’s miraculous to witness.
I’ve realized that for 7 months while the trees are leafless, a lot is still taking place underground. With the weight of the world pressing down on their roots the trees are developing unseen newness. I wonder if it is this compression and pressure that gives the leaves strength to ‘pop’ out! Much like a spring that pops only if it has been compressed!
No wonder we call this time of year SPRING.
