I just finished a Bible study where the author asked us, “What part of you is not enough?
Gosh, this was easy. I didn’t even have to pause and think – my ‘Not Enoughs’ – are right with me all the time.
Not smart enough.
Not productive enough.
Not athletic enough.
Not confident enough.
Not skilled enough.
I could have gone on and on but the blank in the workbook was too small.
Later that morning I took our puppy to the beach for a walk and much to my dismay he ran up to a sad looking an elderly woman to say his clumsy puppy ‘hello’. I’m working on this greeting so he won’t do it without my permission!
Once I got him to sit, I asked the woman if we could practice his greeting with her and she was happy to help. As I had him sit calmly she and I chatted – all part of the training to teach him to be still when I’m occupied.
I complimented her on the lovely scarf she had tied around her head like a headband with the little knot up on top. I thought to myself, “Gosh I should do that! Looks awesome and would keep my hair from blowing all over on the beach! Cute and smart.” But what she said to me stopped me in my tracks…. She said’ Oh! THANK YOU! I thought people would laugh at me! You are an angel for saying that.’ A smile of joy crossed her face and she walked on.
We all have some interior – inferior heart twangs. God helped me see how a little kind word can be so encouraging to the other person. He impressed me that we can’t imagine the other person’s feelings of ‘not enough’ – and we don’t need to carry ours around in our heads either.
I need to them blow away in the wind, and then tie a pretty scarf around my head as a reminder to live as HIS daughter. He likes us the way He made us. We are enough.
