Meningitis Trauma

My 13-month-old daughter was quiet for a day, then a bit more so the next day, and even more so the following. On the third day I called my pediatrician, and we scheduled an office visit for the next morning. When we got to the doctor’s office we met with my pediatrician – who happened to be a world expert in infectious disease. Upon taking one look at our daughter, she called an ambulance and had us transferred to Children’s Hospital in Dallas. What concerned her was the strange small purple spots on her arms and legs, a telltale sign of Meningitis. I was a bit numb, as they strapped me onto the gurney, and buttoned her around my chest for the transport. As we were transported, I prayed out loud for God’s peace. I acknowledged that HE loved her more than I even did, and begged for Him to heal her. I called my husband and he beat us to the hospital.
We prayed. We called our pastors and they met us there within an hour and they prayed. I spent 5 days in ICU curled up next to our infant daughter as she lay unresponsive – entangled in all the tethers and monitors and blood drawing needles. I just held her, and prayed – Oh Lord, be here. Help us, heal her please…. Please give me Peace. Please heal her.
HE answered our desperate plea. She came home a week later. I didn’t have a meltdown for about a month; yet when I did HE kept us in His Peace somehow – I can’t explain it fully.
About 6 months later she went in for her yearly checkup. Due to her medical history, they did a blood test. Much to our alarm, it came back with serious implications of her not making any white blood cells. Immediately we were sent to the premier Leukemia specialist in the Metro area. Once again, we called on our team of prayer warriors, to strengthen us as we went through all the difficult testing with a 19-month-old. Each day for 2 weeks she had to have blood drawn, to track the effectiveness of the drug protocol she was administered. Finally, her frail body began to respond to the medications. Slowly her blood counts rose, as our prayer lifted her health to the Courts above.
We did trust our doctors, but our truest hope was in our Great Physician. Today we are still praising God for his care of our daughter. She had a complete recovery, with no lasting side effects. It has been 27 years, yet the sweet Spirit of LOVE that we felt surrounded by is still as real and powerful today as it was then. We have no doubt; the prayer was key to her recovery. We continue to Praise God for His generous gift of health to her and Peace to us.
